In many cases the Google Search engine and the Google Directory will pretty much cover all your searching needs. However sometimes there are other things to be considered. There are thousands of different search engines and directories on the Internet, nealry all of which are similar but inferior to Google. However the few listed below do offer something extra that may be useful.
However in terms of how to search, you need to think in terms of what words would appear on the page that meets your criteria. Generally its best to try to choose specific words unique to what you are looking for and maybe have three of four words. Think about what other incorrect results this might bring up, and modify your search words so that this would be exluded.
Searching Example
For example, if you are searching for a spare battery for your digital camera. You could search for "camera shop" or better still "digital camera batteries" and this might return a number of sites that sell or have information on this. However they might not sell what you are looking for. If you think about it what you want is not a "camera shop" or even a "digital camera batteries" page, what you are ultimately looking for is a page within a site that sells the exact battery you need for your specific camera. So if you have a Canon Ixus camera you could search for "Canon Ixus battery" but this could well get you lots of pages with "Can Ixus" on (i.e. the camera not the battery). Best of all is to look on the battery you have an see its a Canon NB-1L and search for "NB-1L". This has specific words that will pretty much only be on pages that will be of interest to you, and doesnt have other words that could bring up more general results such as about Canon products, batteries in general, digital cameras in general etc. So if you go to Google and do this search you will quickly come to pages within various sites, all which mention "NB-1L". You can then work your way down this list until you see what you want.
So What can you search for?
That was just and example, you can search for anything at all - here are just a few examples
a specific product
replacement parts
instructions/repair help for a product
finding a fact to settle an argument
looking up a medical condition
getting help with a pc problem
finding out about a pc virus
